ILLINOIS STATE SENATE DISTRICT 20: Martínez: Trump’s fearmongering intended to discourage participation in the census

Census

Illinois State Senate District 20 issued the following announcement on July 22.

State Senator and Assistant Majority Leader, Iris Y. Martinez (D-Chicago) released the following statement regarding President Trump’s new order that aims to exclude undocumented immigrants from being counted in the census.

“The president of the United States is continuing his fearmongering to attack immigrant communities. Now, he wants to exclude the undocumented population from the census to deprive them of proper congressional representation. This charade is a clear overreach of his legal powers and is a cynical attempt to steal the federal funding immigrant communities need and deserve.

“I urge our immigrant communities not to be distracted by this heinous political scheme from the Trump administration. We need to make sure that the census counts everyone, so our essential services get the proper funding. This cowardly attack on the most vulnerable communities proves how vital it is to have appropriate representation that speaks on our behalf.

“Do not get discouraged by Mr. Trump’s showmanship and fill out the census. Immigrant communities are part of the great fabric of America. Immigrants represent who we are as a nation. Engage, and make yourself counted.”
