On March 8, Chicago Mayoral candidate Paul Vallas said that he has gained the endorsement of former rival Willie Wilson in his run to win the office currently occupied by Mayor Lori Lightfoot at City Hall.
Wilson's support of Vallas could prove highly valuable for him in his fight to secure more of the black vote, as his endorsement of now outgoing Lightfoot in 2019 aided her in building stronger ties among African American voters on the South and West sides. Vallas has already secured the endorsements of Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, Ald. Roderick Sawyer, 6th, and Ald. Walter Burnett, 27th.
Although Wilson suggested he was open-minded about supporting Brandon Johnson, his relationship with Vallas runs deep. Over the past year, Vallas and Wilson both ran to Lightfoot’s right as pro-police, law-and-order candidates and were the only people in the field to pursue an endorsement from the controversial Fraternal Order of Police. Additionally, Wilson has blasted Johnson as being too closely aligned with the Chicago Teachers Union, Wilson praised Vallas as someone he feels can bring the entire city together and help get it past all its growing racial tensions.
