Repairs to California Ave Bridge to Begin Tuesday, September 5

Northbound traffic on California between 31st and I-55 will be closed for the duration of the project

The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced that repairs to the California Avenue Bascule Bridge over the Sanitary and Ship Canal will begin on Tuesday, September 5th, 2023 and are expected to last until January 2024. The work will require the closure of the northbound lane on California Ave. between West 31st Street and the Stevenson Expressway (I-55) for the duration of the project. At least one southbound traffic lane will be open at all times. Access to all local yards and business entrances on California Ave. will be maintained.

North bound traffic will detour as follows: Northbound on California Ave., Westbound on the westbound expressway frontage road, Northbound on S. Kedzie Ave., Eastbound on W. 31st St. to California Ave.

CTA Bus #94 Northbound will be detoured as follows: Northbound on California Ave, Eastbound on W. 35th St., Northbound on N. Western Ave., Eastbound on W. 31st St. to California Ave.

The work will include repairs to the bridge deck and floor beams to ensure the long-term health and functionality of the nearly 100-year-old bridge.
