The Chicago Red Stars have announced the signing of Spanish midfielder Maitane López. The player has agreed to a two-year contract that will keep her with the team until the end of 2026.

“I’m beyond excited to start this new chapter of my career with the Chicago Red Stars,” said Maitane. “I’m looking forward to building with this club and meeting the fans! I’m ready to give my all, grow as a player and help the team achieve titles.”

Richard Feuz, general manager of the Chicago Red Stars, expressed enthusiasm about Maitane's addition to the team. “We are very excited to have Maitane join us at the Chicago Red Stars,” he stated. “Maitane’s technical skills, coupled with her experience at Gotham and in Liga F, gives us more reinforcement in the midfield and bolsters our roster ahead of the 2025 season.”

Maitane arrives from New Jersey/New York Gotham FC where she played for two seasons. During her time there, she contributed significantly to Gotham's victory in the 2023 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Championship. She made 31 appearances with 18 starts and accumulated 1,745 minutes across all competitions over two seasons. Her first NWSL goal came in September 2023 against North Carolina Courage.

Before joining NWSL, Maitane spent 11 seasons playing in Spain for clubs such as Levante, Real Sociedad de Fútbol, and Atlético de Madrid Femenino. She scored a total of 42 goals during her time in Spain and helped Atlético de Madrid win the Copa de la Reina in her final season there. Internationally, she has represented Spain at various levels including Under-17, Under-19, and senior national teams.

The Chicago Red Stars ended their 2024 season with a record of 10-14-2, finishing eighth in the league standings which allowed them entry into the NWSL playoffs after ending last place in 2023. They were eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual champions Orlando Pride.
