Chicago Fire FC has unveiled renderings and details of a new $650 million soccer-specific stadium in downtown Chicago. The privately funded project, led by Club Owner and Chairman Joe Mansueto, will be part of The 78, a 62-acre development along the Chicago River.
The stadium will seat around 22,000 fans and is designed by Gensler to reflect the "Chicago School" style with elements like brick, steel, and glass. "I love this city and its architecture," said Mansueto. "This stadium is adding to Chicago’s iconic skyline, so I want it to look timeless."
The design focuses on enhancing the matchday experience with seating closer to the field and features like hospitality spaces and premium seating options. Dave Baldwin, President of Business Operations for Chicago Fire FC, stated: “We are creating a fortress for our team and a home for our fans.”
Deposits for season ticket memberships at the new venue are now being accepted at DearChicago.com. Current Season Ticket Members will have priority.
In addition to hosting Fire matches, the stadium aims to serve as a community asset for various events such as concerts and conferences. Kirk Funkhouser from Gensler noted that they aim to establish "a new standard for the fan and hospitality experience."
The project will be part of The 78's first phase which includes residential buildings, commercial spaces, and public areas designed by Related Midwest. Curt Bailey from Related Midwest emphasized that the development offers "a once-in-a-generation opportunity" for investment in downtown riverfront.
Construction is expected to begin in early 2026 with an opening slated for 2028. Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber commented on Mansueto's impact: “Joe Mansueto isn’t just building a soccer stadium–he’s reshaping the future of soccer in Chicago.”
