The City of Chicago is urging residents to prepare for extreme heat expected this weekend and early next week. The Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) has highlighted the potential hazards posed by rising temperatures and humidity levels, which could make it feel like 100°F or more for several consecutive days.
Public safety remains a top priority for the city, with OEMC collaborating closely with the National Weather Service to monitor weather conditions. "Should conditions deteriorate with the expected heat and humidity, OEMC will coordinate the City’s response by working with departments citywide to assist residents and vulnerable populations," stated an official release.
To aid in preparedness, Chicago residents are encouraged to download the Chicago OEMC App. This tool provides safety information, locations of cooling centers, emergency alerts, weather updates, and more. Additionally, residents can sign up for emergency alert notifications through NotifyChicago.org.
Cooling centers will be operational over the weekend at various locations including DFSS Community Service Centers and other public facilities. Seniors can access any of DFSS's 21 senior centers during weekdays. For detailed locations and hours, residents should refer to the city's data portal or contact 3-1-1.
In addition to providing shelter options, DFSS Homeless Outreach teams will conduct well-being checks on unhoused individuals. Residents are advised to check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives as temperatures climb.
David Perez from ComEd emphasized their readiness: “Investments made by ComEd to modernize infrastructure across our communities has made our grid the most reliable in the nation.” He urged customers to report power outages promptly via text or call.
The Chicago Park District reminds beachgoers to adhere to safety guidelines regarding swimming areas and water conditions. Lifeguards are on duty daily from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
Residents can also create a Smart911 profile that includes vital information such as whether they have air conditioning at home—critical during heat emergencies.
