The Chicago Sky faced a setback against the Washington Mystics, losing 72-79 at Wintrust Arena on June 17. The game started strong for the Sky with a 19-9 run in the first quarter, led by forwards Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese. Despite this, the Mystics remained competitive and trailed by 12 points at halftime.

In the third quarter, Washington overcame Chicago's lead through defensive pressure and transition play, outscoring them 24-12. The teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 56-56. A pivotal moment came when Angel Reese’s three-point play cut Washington's lead to two points with four minutes left. Ariel Atkins then drew a charge on Brittney Sykes, giving momentum to Chicago.

However, turnovers plagued the Sky in crucial moments. They committed 22 turnovers in total, with 13 occurring in the second half, allowing Washington to capitalize on transition opportunities and secure their victory.

Despite the loss, Chicago's young frontcourt showed promise. Cardoso scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Reese contributed 17 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Ariel Atkins added 10 points and seven rebounds along with a career-high four blocks.

Brittney Sykes was instrumental for Washington, scoring a season-high of 32 points from various plays. Contributions from Citron, Shakira Austin, and Iriafen supported the Mystics' offense effectively.

Hailey Van Lith matched her season high of playing time with key minutes early in both halves and during critical moments in the fourth quarter.

This defeat brought Chicago's overall record to 3-8 and their Commissioners Cup standing to 1-4. Their next challenge is against Phoenix Mercury (8-4) at home on Saturday.
