The Chicago Sky, a WNBA team, has announced a partnership with Moonshot to enhance player safety by using technology traditionally applied in national security and defense. This collaboration marks the first instance of such technology being used by a team in the league.
Moonshot's experts will employ advanced methods to detect and eliminate harmful content online, assess risks, and help the team understand the underlying causes of online abuse. "Hate and harassment have no place in sports," stated Nadia Rawlinson, Co-owner and Operating Chairman of the Chicago Sky. The partnership aims to allow players and coaches to concentrate on basketball without concerns over online threats.
Rawlinson highlighted that female athletes, particularly women of color and members of the LGBTQIA+ community, are disproportionately affected by online harassment. She noted that these incidents are rising alongside the growth in women's sports.
Moonshot CEO Vidhya Ramalingam expressed honor in supporting this initiative. "We hope this unique, first-of-its-kind partnership will serve as a model for other sports teams and leagues."
