After School Matters’ planned Orleans Teen Center has received approval from the City Council for $5 million in Tax Increment Financing (TIF) support. The funding will help cover part of the costs for a $26 million renovation project at 1065 N. Orleans St. on Chicago’s Near North Side.
The renovated facility will offer 36,000 square feet of space and is expected to serve approximately 2,100 teenagers each year. Programs at the center will focus on culinary arts, trades, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills. The building previously housed St. Joseph School until its closure in 2002.
The TIF assistance is being allocated through the Near North TIF district.
