New Genesis Assembly of God Baptist Church, located at 1400 N. Laramie Ave. in the Austin neighborhood, may soon become an official Chicago landmark. Mayor Brandon Johnson introduced the proposal to the City Council.
The church was originally designed by architect Moritz F. Strauch and finished in 1924 as Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. The structure underwent several construction phases until 1949, resulting in its distinctive Neo-Gothic style. It features a Lannon stone exterior and a four-story tower that contains bells dating back to 1898.
The New Genesis Assembly of God congregation began using the building in 1997.
If approved, the landmark designation would protect all exterior elevations of the building.
