Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced on Monday that she will be easing COVID-19 restrictions for the upcoming baseball games of the Chicago Cubs and the White Sox.

Lightfoot said that on Opening Day, 8,274 fans will be permitted to enter Cubs’ Wrigley Field Stadium while 8,122 will be allowed to watch the White Sox at the Guaranteed Rate Field Stadium.

Lightfoot stressed that certain restrictions will still be in effect, such as physical distancing. The Chicago mayor said that every spectator should be seated six feet apart just to be on the safe side.

Lightfoot shared the good news on her Twitter page. She said that since  the city was able to curb the spread of COVID-19, her administration is easing up restrictions in both Wrigley Field and Guaranteed Rate Field as a way of rewarding Chicagoans.

Lightfoot wrote, “Folks, we’ve significantly slowed the spread of COVID, getting our positivity rate down to 2.8%. And now, we can begin to safely welcome fans back to our baseball stands on opening day. Although we’re reopening, masking is still of utmost importance.”

In other related news: the Illinois High School Association said that schools can allow 20% capacity at outdoor sporting venues on Monday, signaling a gradual return to normalcy for Chicago students.
