The Chicago Sky has announced the re-signing of guard Michaela Onyenwere. The terms of the agreement remain undisclosed, following team policy.

“Michaela is one of the best young, versatile players in our league,” stated Sky General Manager Jeff Pagliocca. “She embodies the type of player we want on our team and we are excited to watch her continue to grow in a Sky uniform.”

In the 2024 season, Onyenwere achieved an average of 6.6 points and 1.8 rebounds per game, reaching career-high shooting percentages with 41.5% from the field and 36.8% from beyond the arc. She was a starter for the last 16 games of that season, averaging 10.1 points and 2.9 rebounds while making three-point attempts at a rate of 33.3%.

During a notable period from August 25 to September 15, she scored at least 15 points in six games and set three different season highs in scoring during that time frame. Her peak performance was on August 30 against Indiana, where she scored a season-high of 20 points.

Onyenwere also marked her achievement of reaching 1,000 career points on September 15 against Phoenix, where she contributed with an impressive performance by scoring 18 points along with nine rebounds and four successful three-pointers.

Initially acquired by Chicago through a trade with Phoenix in early 2024 after spending one year with the Mercury and two seasons with New York Liberty, Onyenwere has continued to make strides in her professional career.

Head Coach Tyler Marsh expressed his enthusiasm about working with Onyenwere: “I’ve had the chance to get to know Michaela better this offseason, and I’m inspired by her work ethic, passion, basketball IQ and physicality,” he said. “She has grown year after year in this league and I’m really looking forward to coaching her this season.”

Onyenwere herself shared her excitement about returning: “I am so excited to be back in the Chi this year!” she remarked. “Under Tyler’s leadership and guidance, I am elated for what this team will grow into. I’m ready to get to work!”

The Chicago Sky will commence their regular season on May 17 against the Indiana Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse at noon CT.
