39th Ward Updates
39th Ward Newsletter
January 7, 2022
Dear Neighbor,
I have heard from residents who are frustrated with the closure of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) earlier this week. I share your frustration. Students should be learning with their teachers at school. According to public health experts, this is possible with safety protocols. I am in contact with all of our 39th Ward School Communities and CPS to ensure conversations are ongoing and individual school needs are being communicated.
Please note that meals are available at schools from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. If you need childcare, CPS provides Safe Haven sites throughout the city; click here to learn more.
Winter weather and temperatures have arrived. Please check in on your neighbors. If you or someone you know is having issues with their heat, please call our office. Utility assistance programs are available for homeowners, and the Chicago Heat Ordinance requires landlords to supply heat to rental units during colder months.
Property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks of snow and ice. If snow falls overnight, a path that is at least 5 feet wide should be cleared by 10 a.m. If the snow falls during the day, it should be cleared by 10 p.m. If you see a property that has not been shoveled, please call our office and we will contact the property owner. Failure to clear the sidewalks can result in fines.
The City’s vaccine requirement took effect on Monday. The Chicago Vaccine Requirements applies to: indoor dining, indoor fitness, and indoor entertainment and recreation venues where food or beverages are served.
Finally, I want to wish each of your a Happy New Year. One of the great things about the holiday season is the opportunity to say “thank you.” It is my honor to serve as Alderman of the 39th Ward. Thank you.
Very truly yours,
Alderman Samantha Nugent
