The City of Chicago's Department of Family and Support Services is hosting the second annual High-Tech CHI event this week. The day-long event, part of Computer Science Education Week, aims to introduce K-14 students to computing concepts. It will take place on December 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Google Chicago.

"DFSS is incredibly proud to present High-Tech CHI, a program that is built around problem-solving and analytical skills that underscore the importance of a computer science education in today’s society," said DFSS Commissioner Brandie Knazze. She emphasized the growing demand for computer science skills in today's job market.

Launched in 2023 at Google Chicago, the program brought together various stakeholders from Chicagoland's tech sector. In its first year, it attracted 1,051 attendees with support from 15 sponsors and featured 19 sessions.

"It was incredible to see the reception of High-Tech CHI last year from all stakeholders involved," said Abril Vela, Co-Founder and CEO of CS for Success. She highlighted the importance of collaboration across sectors for the event's success.

This year's event will feature two tracks: a Family Engagement Track with activities for K-8th students and parents, and a High School & Beyond Track offering workshops and discussions for older students.

"Computing is not only the language of business but a vital thread in the fabric of our creative, social, and cultural lives," said Mark Harris, Director of Pritzker Tech Talent Labs at Discovery Partners Institute. He expressed excitement about co-sponsoring High-Tech CHI again.

By partnering with community organizations, High-Tech CHI seeks to connect students with opportunities in Chicago's tech industry.

"Google is thrilled to host High-Tech CHI for a second year at our Fulton Market Office in celebration of CS Education Week," said Rob Biederman, Google's Director of State & Local Government Affairs. He reiterated Google's commitment to providing technical skill opportunities for all students.
