The Northwest Side GOP Club is advocating for voters to contact their federal representatives to ask them to advocate for H.R. 2 “Secure the Border Act.”
The move comes as Chicago recently made an emergency declaration regarding the immigrant crisis.
“Urge your IL Congressional Rep to vote for H.R. 2 - Secure the Border Act - to regain control of our borders as record numbers of migrant crossings to the U.S. will significantly increase upon the end of Title 42 Covid immigration restrictions,” Northwest Side GOP Club said on Facebook. “Call: 202-225-3121.”
The Northwest Side GOP Club shared the Chicago Republican Party post on the same matter.
“H.R. 2 includes the measures E-Verify, child labor protections and asylum abuse reforms that are crucial toward ending our border crisis as it intensifies with the end of title 42,” the Chicago Republican Party said. “News outlets across political spectrums are reporting on the unprecedented migrant surges that will occur - surges that our border patrol and communities are unable to handle.”
The House passed H.R. 2 in a 219 to 213 vote. It is awaiting action in the U.S. Senate.
“The goal must be to end the exploitation of children, curb the growing power of the criminal cartels that control human and drug smuggling operations, end the abuse of our asylum system, and rein in the crushing burdens that Biden’s policies have imposed on the American people," the Federation for American Immigration Reform said in a release. "The House has now acted by approving a bill that will accomplish all those things. As the crisis at the border is about to grow significantly worse, it is imperative that the Senate act immediately.”
The bill summary notes what H.R. 2 would do.
H.R. 2 addresses issues on immigration and border security. As an example, "the bill requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to resume activities to construct a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border; provides statutory authorization for Operation Stonegarden, which provides grants to law enforcement agencies for certain border security operations; prohibits DHS from processing the entry of non-U.S. nationals (aliens under federal law) arriving between ports of entry; limits asylum eligibility to non-U.S. nationals who arrive in the United States at a port of entry.; authorizes the removal of a non-U.S. national to a country other than that individual's country of nationality or last lawful habitual residence, whereas currently, this type of removal may only be to a country that has an agreement with the United States for such removal."
It would also "expand the types of crimes that may make an individual ineligible for asylum, such as a conviction for driving while intoxicated causing another person's serious bodily injury or death; authorizes DHS to suspend the introduction of certain non-U.S. nationals at an international border if DHS determines that the suspension is necessary to achieve operational control of that border; prohibits states from imposing licensing requirements on immigration detention facilities used to detain minors; authorizes immigration officers to permit an unaccompanied alien child to withdraw their application for admission into the United States even if the child is unable to make an independent decision to withdraw the application; imposes additional penalties for overstaying a visa; and requires DHS to create an electronic employment eligibility confirmation system modeled after the E-Verify system and requires all employers to use the system.”
U.S. Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.), the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement, shared his thoughts on H.R. 2, the Center for Immigration Studies reported.
“On inauguration day, our border was secure,” McClintock said. “The Trump policies had slowed illegal immigration to a trickle. But that afternoon, Joe Biden reversed these policies and in the last 27 months, the Democrats have deliberately admitted into our country more than 2.1 million illegal aliens. . . . This was only a prelude to the mass invasion now unfolding before our eyes. The Border Patrol union warned us yesterday “field reports from agents across the southern border verify the enormity of this tidal wave of illegal aliens coming now. Huge groups are overwhelming stations and it is completely out of control. Massive releases beginning and it’s going to get much worse.”
